Their way of life soon came to be regarded as heretical, however, and hence reprehensible. They formed small monastic communities, initially to defend themselves more effectively against invasion, and later on the advice of a bishop of Cappadocia, Basil of Caesaria, who wished to combat this departure from orthodoxy but without thereby promoting large monasteries which, as we have seen, were regarded by emperors as a threat to their power. While devoting themselves to prayer, they farmed the land for their subsistence. A number of churches and small monasteries thus came to be established in the region, and villages grew up around them.

Whenever invading hordes followed the customary routes across the Anatolian plateau, monks and peasants would shut themselves up in their cave dwellings, wait until they had passed and then resume life as usual. Refugees of all persuasions found shelter there. Full-size subterranean houses existed in these villages, some of which have survived to this day, though in a serious state of dilapidation.

The geomorphoiogical nature of Cappadocia has been responsible for such treasures as anonymous architecture, rock chapels, cave and troglodytic settlements. In order to preserve and develop its tourist attractiveness, this region as a whole with its unique cultural, historical and natural characteristics, was  inscribed on the World Heritage List of Unesco, under the Natural and Cultural criterias. Since that, Goreme town and it's surroundings has become a national park which placed the region under protection against any negative developments and attempts.

Cappadocia, strange, ravaged landscape, like some eternal upheaval stamped on the face of the earth, a maze of gulleys and canyons etched into the heart of the Anatolian plain.

How many human hopes and prayers linger on like ghosts in this labyrinth?

In this landscape, sheer cliffs are a source of hope and refuge.

Difficult of access as it was, Cappadocia was an ideal haven for the hermits who came and settled there in caves hollowed out of the rock, giving themselves up to a life of contemplation.
